Oversimplified Example: Understanding Gas Escape in Carbonated Beverages

This is a simplified experiment for the beginner and to get you started on the series set.

What you’re testing

How dissolved gas escapes a liquid system once it is exposed to lower-pressure environments.

Materials

  • Carbonated drink (cola, sparkling water)
  • Glass
  • Optional: lid or cover

Method

  1. Pour the drink into a glass
  2. Leave exposed for 20–30 minutes
  3. Compare taste and bubble activity over time
  4. Stir halfway and observe acceleration

What you will see

  • Rapid bubble loss at first
  • Gradual flattening
  • Faster degradation when disturbed

Why it works (simple explanation)

Gas molecules leave the liquid when pressure equilibrium is disrupted.
